Nan hated her real name, everyone called her Lynn. But near the end the hospital staff and carers would call her Evelyn, as they read from her notes, and she didn’t always correct them. This was partly because of her failing hearing no doubt, and also because talking was an effort and she didn’t want to appear rude to these strangers who were looking after her in her last weeks of life.
I always loved her real name, and changed my name from Ruth Eve to Ruth Evelyn by deed pole when I got married.
