Alice Liddell, the Real Alice

Alice Liddell, the Real Alice

I’m reading a very refreshing, thoughtfully written book on my favourite subject at the moment. The Alice Behind Wonderland, by Simon Winchester. I’ve loved Alice in Wonderland since I was 8 years old and have collected many books and other related objects ever since. This is the first book I’ve read about Charles Dodgson’s photography and family history that really throws some light onto the development of what was to become the Alice legend.

The only problem I’ve had with it so far is unfortunately his reading of the photo. I haven’t finished the book yet, so there may be some evidence that comes out to support his opinion, but near the beginning of the book he describes the way Alice is posed in very androcentric terms. As a female reader and viewer, I don’t have the same view of how Alice looks in this photo as he has.
