Recurring Dream

This painting is an image that’s been in my mind since I was very young. I used to have a recurring dream about a hall (possibly school assembly hall?) that was completely empty except for a little girl standing on her own. I wonder if this was a dream about loneliness or being overwhelmed. After listening to some of the dreams my sons have and other people telling me about their childhood dreams/nightmares, it’s clear that children carry a lot of anxiety that they obviously try to make sense of while they’re asleep. I loved Alice in Wonderland from at least the age of 8, maybe some of the darker side of the story stuck with me.

This image comes back into my mind every now and then…
